Ryan Reynolds just asked for a Marvel Cinematic Universe-Deadpool crossover. Here’s what happened next

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn on Sunday tweeted that he’d finally got around to seeing Deadpool 2, and he loved it. Star Ryan Reynolds responded to Gunn’s tweet by asking him point blank if the two franchises could crossover, to which Gunn replied simply, “Yes, please.”

The possibility of a Guardians-Deadpool crossover might have sounded far-fetched only a few years ago, but with Disney’s $50 billion plus takeover of Fox and its assets, it is very likely for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to invite characters from other franchises.

At a recent earnings call for investors, Disney chief Bob Iger confirmed that Avengers 4 would be a ‘significant conclusion’ for the MCU as we know it, and that the studio was already planning to introduce new characters who could continue the franchise. “There’s certainly a lot more stories to tell, a lot more characters to populate those stories with,” he said.

Iger had previously referenced the possibility of the crossover when he told Variety, “Bringing Disney and Fox together will combine some of the world’s most iconic entertainment franchises.”

In fact, Disney touted the possibility of crossing over characters when they announced the takeover. “(The deal) provides Disney with the opportunity to reunite the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool with the Marvel family under one roof and create richer, more complex worlds of inter-related characters and stories that audiences have shown they love,” they said.

Recently Reynolds revealed that Fox had made him cut a joke made at the expense of Disney from Deadpool 2, which has grossed over $400 million for Fox, and is running with the torch until X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants release in 2019.
